Tribal Politics

To counter my last post about the depolarization of politics, as things currently stand, more people stick to a side than not.

It’s a tribal thing. People want to be part of a group. If a person believes in lowering corporate taxes, for example, they’re likely to also be pro-life and anti-gun control. The same is true for the other side.

Generally speaking, it’s easier to support the views of one party than to counter both.

A lot of people have strong opinions on certain issues but are either neutral or uninformed on others. So when someone is pro-choice, yet knows little about tax policies, they’re far more likely to be pro-corporate tax simply because that’s what the left stands for.

And yes, there are people on both sides who truly believe in everything one party stands for. But these people are few and far between.

Becoming educated and informed on all issues takes a lot of effort. For most people, it’s much easier to pick a team and toe the line.
