Relinquish

There’s something so calming about giving up control and putting your fate in the hands of the gods.

Sometimes it comes in the form of trust, other times it’s securing some form of finality.

Signing certain types of contracts is a version of this. Giving a letter of resignation is another. Once made official, you no longer need to think about the decision — it’s made.

But one that always gives me a sense of freedom and blissful helplessness is when the plane leaves the runway. That instant when the wheels no longer touch the tarmac, when the vibration stops, when you’re airborne.

You’ve given up all control. You can’t get off the plane. You’re flying now. And you have no say over whether the plane will land safely.

The next few hours are out of your control.

There’s one less thing you need to worry about.

It’s freeing.
