Preparation

Good preparation is an often-overlooked skill.

In interviews, Matthew McConaughey has mentioned how important preparation is. He says that the reason he seems so laid back and appears to just go with the flow is that he has prepared himself immensely for that situation. It’s easy for him at the moment because he’s already put in the effort.

I like being prepared. That doesn’t mean I always am, but when I have the discipline for it, I’m always better as a result.

Packing for travel is one area where my preparation skill is honed. Depending on the length of the journey, I might have everything for the trip laid out on the floor several days in advance. Even for a weekend trip, I’ll be packed a couple of days ahead of time. I never pack on the day of — even for a day trip.

On the other hand, preparing my mind and body for a busy day is something I need a little more work on. Once again using travel as an example, it’s ideal to be well rested to handle the mental and physical demands of a long day in transit. However, I am more likely to stay up far too late, celebrating the upcoming trip with a few drinks.

Noticing these things is key. Seeing the results of each solidifies in my mind the importance of good preparation. Like with any other skill, it takes practice — though in today’s busy world, it’s one many of us forget to work on.
