I recently re-watched this movie after taking a couple of years off. This might sound a bit strange but, for most of my adult life, I watched this film at least once a year.
Since I was around 18 years old, it’s been my favourite movie. Considering my top three: Linklater’s Before Sunrise/Sunset (the pair share second place) and Spirited Away, Miyazaki’s epic fairy tale, it completes the “movies that don’t fit together” trifecta.
This strange trichotomy oddly reflects my life, I feel that I don’t fit under a label. I fit in just enough, while the rest of me wanders. It’s almost comical how well this unintentionally relates to this very post.
Two decades after my first watch, Fight Club still shakes my mind and catches me off-guard. I notice subtle details and nuances that make the experience almost as exciting as my first viewing.
What I love about this movie is how it strikes me differently as I progress through life. Its messages are so powerful that, as I’ve grown as a person, it plucks different strings with every viewing.
As a young adult, I related to certain aspects, and as I grow, I continue to relate to so many different themes and elements that would be otherwise invisible to my younger self.
This film will not be everyone’s cup of tea. But for its social commentary and outlook at modern society, I think everyone should watch it at least once.
