Make Your Bed

In 2014 Admiral William McRaven gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas. Known as the “Make Your Bed” speech, it went viral and has since become one of the internet’s classic motivational videos.

In short, McRaven says that the first thing you should do when you get up in the morning is make your bed. Do it well. It brings a sense of accomplishment and sets you on a path of success.

It’s a great concept, and it works. But any action or task will do.

Personally, due to schedules, I typically wake up hours before my wife. Attempting to make the bed when I get up will end badly for both of us.

The idea is that to do something as early as possible. Make your bed, unload the dishwasher, do ten pushups, fold the laundry, write 100 words.

Accomplishing any challenge or task immediately upon waking serves two purposes. Most importantly, it is wildly powerful in setting the tone for the rest of your day. And as a bonus, you clear a task from your to-do list while barely conscious.

If you aren’t already in the habit of making your bed in the morning, take Admiral McRaven’s advice.

Start your day with a win.
