Is This Real?

Sebastian Junger is one of my favourite writers. He’s a former war journalist who spent time embedded in the Korrengal Valley — the Afghanistan of the war in Afghanistan, as he put it.

I just watched a clip of an interview with him, speaking of a recent near-death experience. He mentioned that in the days following, he didn’t know whether he was actually alive or he had died in the hospital and his living experience was a death-induced hallucination.

It reminded me of a scene from Before Sunrise, where Celene thought that her existence may be the dying dreams of an old woman’s life.

The truth is, none of us would ever know.

My life has gotten more curious and interesting in recent years — in the same way that a psychedelic hallucination tends to amplify.

Of course, I don’t believe that my life is a death dream. But if it were, I wouldn’t complain. So far, it’s been a pretty good one.
