Living downtown has immeasurable perks. However, there are also downsides. Most of these are minor irritants that fade over time. They rarely affect day-to-day existence.
But occasionally things blow up.
Literally.
Yesterday was Canada Day. A nationwide celebration of all things Canadian. And with it, at least where I live, comes a spectacular fireworks display.
It’s a scene that draws thousands to the city centre for the evening as the sky lights up in a stunning display of colour — followed by the inevitable, thunderous, booms.
The problem, for me at least, is that while I would otherwise join in the festivities, I wake for my day-job at an ungodly hour.
And while my balcony has one of the best views of the display, the explosions are a shattering wake-up call in the middle of my slumber.
The inevitability of it allowed me to prepare mentally. Though as much as I had anticipated it, it was a slow start to the day.
Needless to say, I spent most of today running on caffeine.
