Get a Job

Get a job, you bum.

I live downtown, and in the summer the homeless epidemic is impossible to ignore. I’ve written before about the causes of homelessness, and I understand how easily someone can fall into such misfortune.

But while I can empathise with many of them, others criticize and attack. Their comments are standard and repetitive. They’re lazy. They’re junkies. They want to be homeless to avoid paying taxes…

I remember a few years ago seeing a Facebook comment from a former colleague. She criticized their laziness and suggested that the homeless issue would go away if they would all simply get jobs.

As if it were such an easy task.

She was a bit of an entrepreneur at this point and owned a successful business with multiple locations.

I didn’t comment. I didn’t write to her. Enough people stepped up and did that for me.

Would she be willing to hire a few homeless people? If they were willing to work, would she help give them the boost they needed?

Crickets.

And that’s the typical attitude. People love to criticize and offer solutions, but few are willing to step up and do anything to help.
