Extinction

Without realizing it, you might eat something for the last time.

Not by choice, but because there is no more.

None. Gone. Over.

Seafood is especially at risk these days. With a rising middle class across the globe, overfishing is a serious problem.

And while sustainability is trendy, it’s not widespread enough.

The fact is, some things we enjoy today will likely be gone in our lifetime.

As with other species hunted to extinction over the last few centuries, our consumption occasionally results in eradication.

There are steps we can take to slow this progress, even stop it. But with a growing number of mouths to feed — for pleasure rather than necessity — it’s not easy to solve.

This isn’t a PSA for the animal welfare cause. Simply an acknowledgement.

I hope we can mitigate the problem or solve it altogether.

Until then, savour every bite.
