Cyclists

Cyclists can be assholes.

To add to yesterday’s article on bikes, I want to acknowledge those special people who ruin it for the rest of us.

As I said, bikes are vehicles — and they should be treated as such.

The problem is that a lot of people believe that they don’t need to follow the same rules as a vehicle. They blow through stop signs and red lights without blinking. They ride on pedestrian crosswalks rather than walking. They ride between lanes when it conveniences them yet dare to get upset when someone calls them out.

Thankfully, most of my riding is off-road. But living downtown I still spend a lot of time on the streets.

And yes, sometimes I ignore a stop sign or traffic light — but only when there isn’t anyone around.

I understand my role. I’m held to many of the same rules as someone driving a vehicle. And as someone who, as a driver, often becomes infuriated with a shitty cyclist, I do my part to follow the rules.
