Computer programming is incredibly simple in its basic form. One simply types in a few basic rules and they are executed in logical order. It isn’t affected by emotion, it is immune to distraction, and it cannot get drunk.

I crossed off a pretty wild bucket list item last weekend when I took my first ride in a self-driving taxi.

San Francisco is one of the few places in the world where Waymo is allowed to operate in public, so on my recent visit, the experience was high on my list.

I’m a bit of a futurist. I think I always have been.

I’m not a “stand in line for the newest iPhone” futurist, but I’m definitely an early adopter of many things. So a self-driving car? Of course, I’m going to try that.

And the experience was beyond surreal.

So was the second.

And the third.

Costing roughly the same as an Uber or a taxi, this technology will no doubt be a disruptor — just not yet. There were minor mistakes and a few errors in driving ability that were safely corrected. But for something still in its public infancy, it showcased something that isn’t going away.

This is science fiction becoming reality.

And it’s going to make roads safer.
