Return

A week ago, few people had ever heard of Emily Armstrong — today, she’s arguably one of the most searched musicians in North America.

Linkin Park appeared on the scene while I was in high school. My angsty, intense music-loving self was drawn to their sound. Over the years, as my mentality shifted, so did their style. Yet somehow, unlike other bands of their era, their shift followed mine.

I remained a fan until the end.

When Chester Bennington took his life in 2017, it hit me more than I would have expected. I was a fan, but not emotionally attached.

Still, it shook me.

Since then, although I’ve listened to their music occasionally, it’s largely become part of my past. And I assumed that Linkin Park would be placed on the shelf of past good eras of my life.

Then, last Thursday, the band dropped a surprise concert on YouTube. The livestream announced their return and new album, aptly named From Zero, with Armstrong as their new singer.

I was skeptical at first — I mean, Chester had a hell of a vocal range — I couldn’t imagine anyone holding a candle to that. But with an open mind and few expectations, I dove in.

My spine is still shivering.

This is incredible.
