What is it about 1980’s power ballads?

They’re one part cheesy and awful, yet equally addictive.

Since the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, I’ve been hearing a lot of these classic gems on my playlists. And while they’re often looked at as a laughable moment in musical history, there’s clearly something to them as they’ve been sampled and covered in every decade since.

What makes these borderline-cringe songs so appealing? Why is their cheesiness so captivating?
