Temporary

At some point in time, this was all covered in water.

Looking down at the snow-capped Rockies, somewhere over Colorado, I’m reminded that this was once the bottom of the sea.

At some point, it may be again. Or perhaps the mountains will continue to climb, dragging with them the surrounding landscape. Someday Denver may again be underwater, or maybe too elevated for human survival.

Not that it matters in the long term. In a few billion years the Milky Way will collide with Andromeda and destroy all life as we know it. A few billion more and our sun will sputter out and die.

This isn’t a negative thought. The impermanence of everything is humbling. It’s healthy to pause and appreciate the brief time we’re given in this unfathomable infinity.

Savour each moment. Everything is temporary.

Maybe even infinity itself.
