Person holding a question mark sign over their face.

Why?

The lockdowns and restrictions put upon us this year are frustrating at best. For most of us, and most of the world, what’s been happening this year is uncharted territory.

A lot of people are looking for answers to a situation we’re all struggling to understand. There are so many strange things unfolding these days that we’ve never experienced before. So I see why people are grasping at fringe ideas in an attempt to find meaning to it all.

But for the life of me, I can’t find any logical reason that explains the motivation behind the actual theories themselves.

Now, I’m not here to tell anyone they’re wrong; especially when it comes to such issues. I’m not an epidemiologist, an economist or a political scientist.

Though I’m pretty sure most conspiracy theorists lack those qualifications as well.

I just want to find the reasoning — the why — behind the arguments I’m seeing daily across social media.

Pointing fingers and looking for someone to blame is natural. The problem is that people don’t do things at random, especially something on this level. And shaking the entire planet and world economy like a snow globe isn’t something that happens without good reason.

So if there is some nefarious person or group of people behind this whole thing, I want to try and understand the why.

Because without the why, this is all just a stroke of bad luck.

And most of the time that’s all it is.

“The Government wants to control us…”

Spoiler alert: They already do.

You can’t cross a border without a passport. If you want to drive a car, you need a government-issued licence and literal registration. You as a physical human were registered with them the day you were born and you pay taxes to them on nearly everything you earn and own.

Limiting frivolous activities outside your home to help stop the spread of a virus does absolutely nothing for them.

…And then there’s the mask issue.

If the government wanted to hold more power and control over you, the last thing they would want is for everyone to have their faces covered.

Orwellian facial recognition systems exist these days in everything from smart phones to public security cameras. The problem is that they don’t work all that well when there are no faces to recognize.

I mean, in many ways this is actually the opposite of control. You can legally wear a mask inside a bank or a government building right now without anyone blinking an eye. This isn’t a restriction of freedom, it’s a freedom you’ve never experienced before.

“They’re doing this as an excuse to increase taxes…”

Totally. They invented a fake pandemic so that they can use it as a reason to take more of your hard-earned dollars. Yet their method of doing so involves shutting down the economy and putting thousands of people out of work.

The problem is that it’s hard to tax people who aren’t earning money.

And then you have to take into account the fact that your corrupt, tyrannical leader has also managed to get every other world leader on board — just for an attempt at bringing in a few extra bucks.

Now these first two examples are focused on the theories surrounding local government. They accuse the premiers and governors, presidents and prime ministers of villainous activities.

But this isn’t a localized issue, and the fact that this needs pointing out is downright terrifying. Despite what you might have learned at YouTube University, this is absolutely a global event.

I personally know people who have been locked-down in Australia, Bolivia, Bosnia, Colombia, El Salvador, England, Italy, Romania and Vietnam.

I can appreciate questioning the motives of your government. And sure, they might be using this situation to their advantage. But they do not have the resources or the power to create worldwide chaos just to take a little more from you.

“The pharmaceutical companies are behind it…”

Like with government, I acknowledge a distrust of Big Pharma and multinational corporations. Their sole purpose, ultimately, is to make money.

But as powerful as they may be, I don’t see them having the power or the funds to corrupt nearly every government in the world into going along with their game.

And just to make some money from a vaccine? The money it would cost to fake a global pandemic likely far-exceeds what they would make from a vaccine. And that’s not taking into account that even if and when the vaccine becomes widely available there could be side-effects.

That sort of thing could ruin a company. I doubt shareholders would be too appreciative of such a dangerous bet.

As corrupt as some of these corporations are, I just don’t see any logic in such an elaborate plan to sell a new product.

If that were the case, they would have used something far more terrifying.

“Bill Gates is behind it…”

This one blows my mind.

He’s already one of the wealthiest people on the planet. He actively donates huge amounts of money to charitable organizations and personally supports taxing upwards of 70% on the ultra-wealthy.

So why would he go through this much trouble just to make more money? Sure, he’ll likely make a lot of money on his pharmaceutical investments when a vaccine is widely available. But that’s not a Bill Gates thing, anyone who owns stock in Pfizer is going to benefit.

So what then, to chip us with a vaccine? We’ll get to that later.

Really. Please tell me why a computer geek who gives away most of his money to help people would be behind this whole thing?

So if it isn’t your local government, a billionaire philanthropist or big pharma that’s behind all this, who is it?

“It must be an uber-powerful global cabal…”

This is the ultimate trump card for conspiracy theorists without a concrete argument.

Generations of the world’s wealthiest families, with ties back to the Knights Templar; operating in secret as the Illuminati and plain sight as the Freemasons. This great and all-powerful conglomerate of lizard-people control all aspects of the functioning world…

The idea is exciting. And it’s a tricky one because, as absurd as it is, it’s almost impossible to disprove.

That said, as has been the common thread here, what’s the reasoning behind creating or faking a global pandemic?

Power and control? If they really are what they are, they already have it all. Money? Again, they have an infinite supply.

So is this then some Joker-esque form of entertainment? Life in castles and billion-dollar yachts is only so entertaining that ‘watching the world burn’ is the only thing that gets them off?

As disturbing as this concept is, and (just for fun) assuming the cabal is real, the idea that they would create global catastrophe for fun isn’t all that far-fetched.

But if their motivation was worldwide chaos for the sake of entertainment, why this?

Not to downplay the seriousness of our current situation but on a global and historical scale, this is fairly mild.

Hundreds of thousands of people have died — and that is absolutely tragic. Jobs have been lost and the economy has had a bumpy few months. But for the vast majority of people, everything that is currently happening, at least concerning lockdowns and restrictions, it’s all little more than an inconvenience.

As bad as this whole thing is, they could do better.

If an all-powerful global cabal was looking to unleash chaos across the planet for the sake of entertainment, this seems like a pretty anticlimactic show — especially considering the costs and logistics involved in production.

It just doesn’t make sense. There’s no logic behind this pandemic being for the sheer entertainment of the global elites.

And if not for that reason, then what?

“…to chip us with a vaccine!”

Yes. You are so important that a bunch of overwhelmingly powerful people want to know what you’re up to at all times. You know, aside from when you’re walking around with a phone or a smartwatch; showing people what you ate and where from on Instagram, or sharing your personal thoughts on Facebook for hours on end.

Smart TVs, FitBits, laptops, tablets, televisions, Alexa, Siri, Nest, Spotify… your fucking browser history.

If they exist: They. Already. Know. Everything. About. You.

Shit Happens

Conspiracy theories exist as a coping mechanism for dealing with the unknown. Humans don’t like not knowing. We are by scientific definition “wise man.” So when we don’t have a clear answer for something we, by nature, find one — whether it’s true or not.

The fact is, sometimes shit just happens. Once every few decades or so, some event occurs that causes the entire world to suffer.

From what I can tell, that’s all this is.

And just like in times before, this will soon be a blink in history.

Stop arguing over nonsense.

Send each other some love.

Colourful hand making a peace sign.
